Lanka Navy denies shooting Indian poachers

Sri Lanka Navy yesterday rejected allegations that its personnel shot dead a 21-year-old Indian fisherman on Monday evening while he was fishing a short distance off Katchatheevu islet. Indian media reports stated that a 21-year-old fisherman from Tamil Nadu was shot dead while another suffered injuries when their boat came under attack late Monday night, allegedly from the Sri Lankan Navy. Navy media spokesperson Commander Chaminda Walakuluge when contacted denied the charge but added that however, a probe has been launched into the allegations leveled in the Indian media. According to Indian media, angry relatives of the dead youth have refused to receive his body from the hospital, demanding that a minister should visit them, and also seeking assurance for a permanent solution.

Weapons in Mount Court: Suspect surrenders

Don Shalu Roshan Indika de Silva alias ‘Rosa’, the main suspect in connection with the case where a pistol and revolver were found hidden inside the Mount Lavinia Court premises, surrendered to the Police yesterday (2nd March) night. ‘Rosa’ is allegedly an underworld figure. 20 other suspects were remanded in connection with the case, by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate until the 13th March yesterday.

Docs march against SAITM

Government doctors’ strike in the Western Province against the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) affected a large number of patients seeking treatment at state-run hospitals. The Branch union of the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) decided to extend the four-hour strike, which was to end at 12 noon to 24 hours as, it said, the government was doing precious little to solve the problem. The Castle Street Hospital and the De Soysa Maternity Hospitals, the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (LRH), the ‘Apeksha,’ Hospital for Cancer patients and the renal care units were exempted from the strike. Doctors in the province carried out all emergency services and admissions.

Twenty people who were arrested over their alleged links to weapons found inside a court in Mt. Lavinia have been remanded until 13 arch, reporter said.

Earth embankment collapses, one killed and two injured Two persons were killed and another injured when an earth bund collapsed at a site in the Moragahakanda -Kaluganga Project in the Laggala area yesterday morning, Police said. According to Police, the victims were identified as an excavator operator and a backhoe operator. They were critically injured and died while under surgery at the Laggala Hospital, Police added. Meanwhile a search, involving Police and volunteers is currently underway to trace another backhoe operator who is reported missing following the incident.

Raggers will be promptly expelled

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to expel students who henceforth engage in any form of ragging......in all Universities throughout the country. A top UGC source said that a unit has been formed to receive complaints related to ragging, on a 24-hour basis, and that those found guilty of ragging in any form would be immediately expelled from the entire university system. The UGC requests the public to inform the new Unit about any incidents related to ragging. The Unit's officials can be contacted on 0112-123456 or 0112-123700.

Vajira Thera injured in accident

Sabaragamuwa University Chancellor the Ven. Professor Kamburugamuwe Vajira Thera has suffered minor injuries when the vehicle he was in had plunged down a precipice at Kadugannawa today, police said. Four passengers including the Thera were injured in the accident and admitted to the nearest hospitals. Hospital sources said the prelate was out of danger.
