After 17 days of sporting excitement, a closing ceremony in Rio de Janeiro has lowered the curtain on the first ever Olympic Games in South America. Rain and strong wind accompanied the closing ceremony in the Maracana Stadium, concluding an Olympic games troubled by security scares and empty seats but which nevertheless had many successes. International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach officially closed two weeks of competition he called "marvelous". Bach handed the Olympic flag over to Tokyo, where the 2020 Olympic Summer Games will take place.
