15 years after Remembering Susanthika Sydney Olympics victory
Yesterday marks the 15th anniversary of Susanthika Jayasinghe’s victory at the Women’s 200 metre sprint at the 2000 Sydney Olympic games. Speaking to Sports1st today, Susanthika Jayasinghe said she hopes to establish an athletics institute in the future, where promising athletes will receive all facilities and education to further their careers, free of charge. Born on December 17 1975 in Ethnawala, Warakapola, Susanthika Jayasinghe was the youngest of four siblings. Widely recognised as the most successful sportswoman Sri Lanka has ever produced, Susanthika Jayasinghe won silver and bronze medals at the World Athletics Championships in Athens in 1997 and in Osaka in 2007. She has also won six gold medals at four Asian Athletics Championships and one gold, two silver and a bronze medal in three Asian Games.
