Amunugama to introduce New legislation

Minister of Special Assignment Dr. Sarath Amunugama says he has proposed legislation that would allow the state to absorb the assets of those who have defrauded state funds. Addressing an event in Galagedara the Minister said there is no provision in the law to retain funds lost to frauds. He said, “I have tabled a proposal in Parliament next week to appoint a Criminal Investigative Committee and to prosecute all those who have corruption allegations against them”. Minister Sarath Amunugama said there was a massive gap in the prevalent law since there was no way to retain funds stolen by those committing frauds against the government. He added, “some convicted of corruption are punished with a prison sentence but the assets stolen remain lost”.
