FCID allowed to check Namal's bank accounts

Colombo Additional Magistrate Aruna Buddhadasa today permitted the FCID to check the bank accounts of company known as Hovell Constructions in the inquiry being conducted under the Money Laundering Act against Namal Rajapaksa and five others for purchasing Hello Corp shares from questionable funds. The FCID said it had earlier filed two separate cases against the suspects on charges of obtaining Rs.30 million from Hovell Construction Company and Rs.15 million from Boston Capital Company for services provided by NR Consultancy and Gowers Corporation, which are headed by Mr. Rajapaksa. It said Mr. Rajapaksa who dealt with Boston Capital and Hovell Construction had given Rs.15 million and Rs.30 million to these companies through a person identified as Indika Karunajeewa with the intention of concealing the origin of the questionable funds. The FCID said that money was later transferred to Gowers Corporation and NR Consultancy, also headed by Mr. Rajapaksa, saying they were for services provided. Inspector M.M. Sajith today sought court permission to check the bank accounts of Hovell Construction, which had dealt with NR Consultancy and Gowers Corporation.

The Joint Opposition has exposed details of questionable sale of land in the city of Colombo. UPFA Parliamentarian, Bandula Gunewardena: A gazette notification contains the sale of a massively populated plot land in Slave Island, Colombo 2, which is around eight acres, for a sum of 130 million US Dollars under the Strategic Development Bill and this has been issued by Minister Malik Samarawickrama after consulting the Finance Minister. According to parliamentarian Gunawardena the investor for this is a private company called One-Colombo Project Private Limited, and this project is to be handed over to them in 2017 and is scheduled to be completed in another eight years.

FCID illegal says Minister Susil

I reiterate that the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) is illegal said the Minister of Science Technology and Research Susil Premajayantha yesterday. Speaking further, he maintained that only those who are not conversant with the law are scared of these institutions and he was not one of them. The minister made these remarks in reply to a question posed by journalists at a press briefing held at the SLFP headquarters yesterday. He said that due to certain actions by the FCID, it led to certain individuals gaining popularity, especially when a minister or a MP is arrested and legal action is filed. He said this could translate into an election victory for the person instigating the arrest. Referring to the formation of the FCID he said this was not an uncommon phenomenon as with the change of government new law enforcement arms also pop up.

President on Central Bank bond issue

The COPE report on the Central Bank bond issue has already been sent to the AG by the Prime Minister’s Office before it was approved by Parliament yesterday, the President said. President Maithripala Sirisena made the observation while speaking at an event held at the Abeyaramaya temple in Narahenpita on Wednesday. “Then the report has also been forwarded to the IGP,” he said. President Sirisena also went on to say he is not agreeing with the move to conduct probe with respect of the case as a civil case, not as a criminal case. “Advice from legal experts of the country was obtained before appointing the CoI, or other investigations will be dragged for two to three years,” he said.

Debate on the bond issue in session The Perpetual Treasuries Limited had recorded an excessive profit of more than Rs 13 billion during the 21 months from January 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016, Chief Opposition Whip and JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said. He was moving an adjournment motion in Parliament yesterday on the COPE report on the Central Bank Treasury Bonds investigation. He said the Perpetual Treasuries had purchased bonds worth of Rs 227 billion during the 14 months from February 28, 2015 to May 31, 2016. Out of that Rs 141 billion worth bonds had been purchased directly while Rs 86 billion worth bonds had been purchased through other institutions such as state banks.

Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne yesterday re-remanded till February 7, 2017, UPFA, Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa and the former Director General of the State Engineering Corporation, Sudesh Lokuhannedi. They are suspected of having abused 40 state vehicles, the loss to state amounting Rs. 90 million. This alleged offence had been committed during the former regime.

Emphasizing the need of youth participation in politics, he said that the country was desperately in need of young generation’s participation in politics. The Minister said he was able to develop Uva-Wellassa and hand it over to the people. “We don’t have an intention to make family trees in politics and to create successors. I don’t have any blood relatives in this field,” he said.
