USA-wide protests in solidarity with Sri Lankan protestors

For the first time in history, Sri Lankan living in the United States of America organized a USA-wide protest on the 1st of May 2022, in solidarity with the protests taking place in Sri Lanka against the present President, Prime Minister, and Government. Thousands of Sri Lankans living in the United States stood in solidarity with their fellow Sri Lankans in a protest series organized by the Sri Lankan Student Collective in the USA. The protests took place across 50 locations in 43 States in the US. The Sri Lankans in America also signed a series of letters requesting that the wealth and income of Rajapaksa’s who hold US citizenship, be investigated and to save Sri Lanka from the Rajapaksas. The letters are to be submitted to the Senate and the US Congress.

Three persons including a 14-year-old boy have been arrested by police over an accident last night involving a Defender vehicle and a motorcycle at Kuliyapitiya, which had caused the death of the motorcyclist. The accident had occurred in the Kanadulla area in Kuliyapitiya last night when the Defender had collided with a motorcycle, killing the motorcycle rider on the spot. The deceased is a 38-year-old resident of Kanadulla in Kuliyapitiya. The police spokesman said that three persons including the driver of the Defender vehicle were arrested and that a 14-year-old boy is also among the arrestees. Meanwhile it is reported that a group of residents of the area angered by the incident had attacked the Defender vehicle and torched it as police officers had attempted to escort it to the police station.

Minister of Health Prof. Channa Jayasumana has issued a Gazette Extraordinary, allowing a price increase on a total of 60 varieties of medicinal drugs. As per the communiqué, dated April 28, the traders, distributors, pharmacists, medical practitioners, dentists, veterinary surgeons, medical institutions including private medical institutions, and pharmacies are permitted to raise the retail prices of relevant medicinal drugs by 40%. Accordingly, a tablet of 500mg of Paracetamol will now cost Rs. 4.16 and a tablet of 75mg of Aspirin, which was previously at Rs. 5.06, is now priced at Rs. 7.08. Meanwhile, the price of a tablet of 375mg of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid has been increased to Rs. 83.71. The gazette notification mentions the revised price of a tablet of 50mcg of Thyroxine as Rs. 14.41. The prices of these 60 varieties of medicinal drugs were previously revised in a gazette notification published on the 15th of March.

Train services are disrupted today (April 28) as the employees from several railway trade unions have not reported to work, says the General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways. A host of trade unions representing all state, semi-government and private sectors resorted to an island-wide strike for 24 hours today (April 28), to express their dissatisfaction towards the government. Many sectors in the country including plantation, agriculture, electricity, fisheries, banks, health, ports, economic centres, teachers and principals will join the trade union action. According to reports, approximately 1,000 trade unions have pledged support for the strike action.

A group of Sri Lankans have set up camp outside Temple Trees in Colombo, not far from the Occupy Galle Face protest site. They are demanding that the Prime Minister and his government resign with immediate effect. News 1st correspondents said that the group spent the entire night at the protest site, while Sri Lanka Police deployed additional security to the existing security detail around Temple Trees. The Colombo Additional Magistrate rejected a request on Monday (25) made by the Colpetty Police to order the evacuation of protestors in front of Temple Trees. In addition, Sri Lanka Police decided park a number of their buses and trucks on the pavement in an attempt to prevent the protestors from continuing their campaign.

She gave the assurance during a meeting between President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the World Bank representative in Sri Lanka on Tuesday (26) at the President’s office.
