Sri Lankans have used vehicles and tires to block roads as a mark of protest over the recent fuel price hike by the government, as well as the shortage of fuel in the country. The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation on Monday (18) night decided to increase fuel prices, and those were waiting in line for hours at filling stations were forced to purchase fuel at increased rates, which prompted an angry response from them. Protests were staged in several areas today over the ongoing fuel crisis and the increase in fuel prices. Bus operators in some areas suspended operations owing to the fuel price hike and shortage of fuel. Protesters also blocked traffic in some areas resulting in tense situations. Buses were parked across the road in Galle obstructing vehicular movements.

One person has died and over 10 people injured from gun shot injuries after protestors and police clashed in Rambukkana this afternoon. Videos surfacing from the ground showed protestors carrying the wounded and rushing them to the hospital, with one protestor alleging that the police were to blame for it. Following this, protestors have now surrounded the Rambukkana Police Station and are hurling stones at the building. Earlier in the afternoon, police had shot tear gas on the protestors to disperse them after they were protesting for 15 hours against the fuel price hike.

Responding to the reports that former Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekara was using a V8 luxury vehicle used earlier by Zahran Hashim who led the Easter Sunday Attacks, the police said a vehicle used by Zahran has not been seized by the police. However, the CID has seized a WP CAS 1411 4WD luxury vehicle was used by Easter Sunday attacker named Mohammad Ibrahim Illaf Ahmed who blew himself at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Kollupitiya. Police said the vehicle was duly confiscated through a Gazette Notification Ref. 2123/3 dated May 13, 2019 and handed over to the Sri Lanka Police, after which it was handed over to the Police Transport Division and attached to the Police Special Task Force. SJB MP Harin Fernando in Parliament questioned as to how former Minister Weerasekara was using the V8 luxury vehicle used by suicide bomber Zahran Hashim. He questioned as to how a vehicle which was kept as a case production in the courts be used by a minister. MP Weerasekara denied that he had used the vehicle

The road is blocked by a protest staged by a group of three-wheeler drivers demanding fuel. In another development, vehicular movement on the Colombo-Chilaw road was obstructed in the area of Kakapalliya this morning, due to a demonstration organized by the owners of private sector buses. Another protest was staged in the middle of Dambulla town earlier today, by owners and drivers of backhoe loaders. The protest caused traffic congestion in the area as the road was blocked with backhoe loaders. The agitations came after the Lanka IOC and the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) increased the prices of fuel yet again, amidst the ongoing shortage of fuel and dollar crisis. Lanka IOC’s price hike was effective from midnight on April 17. The CPC, mirroring the move, announced its price revision yesterday.

Sri Lankans continue to occupy the Galle Face stretch opposite the President’s Office demanding the immediate resignation of the President, Prime Minister, and the Government. They have already rejected an offer by the Prime Minister for a sit down and discuss their issues. A large number of people including artists and master blaster Sanath Jayasuriya joined the ongoing protest at Galle Face, the main beachfront in the capital Colombo, outside Sri Lankan President’s Office for the 8th day. The Occupy Galle Face protest is continuing in the Galle Face Green area in the capital city of Colombo as the Island nation is facing its worst economic crisis since independence with food and fuel shortages, soaring prices, and power cuts. Three acting ministers appointed

Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Buddhika Pathirana, was sworn in as Acting Minister of Industry and Commerce, Resettlement, Co-operative Development and Vocational Training and Skills Development, before President Maithripala Sirisena today. The ministry was previously held by Rishad Bathiudeen. State Minister of City Planning & Water Supply, Lucky Jayawardana, was appointed as Acting Minister of City Planning & Water Supply and Higher Education, the post which was previously held by Rauff Hakeem. Deputy Minister of Petroleum Resources Development, Anoma Gamage, was appointed as Acting Minister of Highways & Road Development and Petroleum Resources Development. Kabir Hashim was the previous Minister of Highways & Road Development and Petroleum Resources Development.

Modi pays tribute to vicitims of Easter terror attack

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday visited St. Anthony's Shrine in Kochchikade - one of the sites of the horrific Easter Sunday attacks - soon after his arrival in Sri Lanka. He paid tributes to the victims of the terror strikes, expressing India's affirmation of solidarity with Sri Lanka in the wake of the attacks. "Started the Sri Lanka visit by paying my respect at one of the sites of the horrific Easter Sunday Attack, St. Anthony's Shrine, Kochchikade. My heart goes out to the families of the victims and the injured," Modi tweeted.

Govt. to ban 'Wadu Madu' and chain saws

Legal and administrative steps would be taken by the government shortly to prohibit the import of tree cutting machines, chainsaws, mechanical saws and the carpenter sheds popularly known as ‘wadu maduwa’, in a bid to protect the environment - in particular, the forest density of the country, President Maithripala Sirisena declared today. He added that people would have to import furniture as deforestation and tree cutting would be banned fully. Delivering the keynote address at a ceremony held to mark ‘World Environment Day 2019’ under the theme, ‘Minimising of air pollution through sustainable forest management’ at the BMICH last morning, President Sirisena went on to say that if these measures were taken and implemented for ten years, the forest density of Sri Lanka could be increased to an environment friendly 32% from the current not so satisfactory 28%. “A few months ago, I went to a funeral house at Kurunegala. A poor looking old person approached me and asked, ‘Sir you are the Environment Minister?’ and I said ‘yes’. He again said you work hard to protect the environment and forests, don’t you? Yes, no one can cut trees without my permission, I said.

(IGP) Pujith Jayasundara Speaks

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara testifying at the Special Parliamentary Select Committee stated that the President has asked him not to attend the National Security Council meetings. IGP Pujith Jayasundara is currently testifying before the Special Parliamentary Select Committee appointed to look into the terrorist attacks on Easter Sunday. When he was inquired whether he attended National Security Council meetings, the IGP responded saying that he attended the meetings until October 23rd in 2018 since the day he took up the post as the IGP. “However, then-Defense Secretary (Kapila Waidyaratne) verbally informed me that the President has asked to notify that there is no need for me to attend the meetings thereafter,” stated the IGP. “I didn’t inquire the next Defense Secretary whether I should attend the meetings again either. When I asked if I should send a replacement in my stead, I was told that there was no such need”, testified the IGP. “I was called again for the meetings after the April 21st Easter Day attacks”, said Jayasundara.
