Supermoon in Sri Lanka

Monday, November 14, which is Ill Full-Moon Poya day brings the moon ‘closest’ in decades. This occurrence is called “supermoon”. “Supermoon” is the popular term for when a full moon coincides with what scientists call the moon’s perigee — the point in its orbit when the moon makes its closest approach to Earth. The year 1948 was the last time the supermoon happened, and won’t happen again until 2034. It will appear around 14% bigger and 30% brighter compared with the smallest full moons. This time around, NASA says closest approach will occur at 6:21 a.m. (Approx. 4:51 PM local time) EST Monday (November 14) and the peak full moon will occur at 8:52 a.m. EST (Approx. 7:22 p.m. local time).
