Chandana Jayarathna on Space debris hitting Lanka Sea
Chandana Jayarathna 04-11-2015 4th Nov 2015 Some uncertainty prevailed yesterday following the announcement of a mysterious chunk of space debris hitting the earth off the coast of Sri Lanka on Nov. 13. People living along the Southern Coast were eager to know the truth about the possible crash of the object, dubbed WTF1190F, is set to land in the Indian Ocean, around 40 miles (65km) off the southern tip of Sri Lanka, at 11:50 am local time on Nov. 13. Prof. Chandana Jayaratne, Department of Physics, University of Colombo said that it was too early to determine the exact area where the space debris would land. "The wind pattern among many other determinant factors would decide where the space junk will land. There is a possible danger of it hitting the land. There would be minor effects such as changes in wave patterns if it lands in the sea. But we are yet to decide accurately where the space junk is going to hit," he told The Island yesterday.
