TThe proceedings of the special presidential Commission of Inquiry (CoI), appointed to probe large scale corruption, have been suspended till 9.00am tomorrow (16) after former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s lawyers objected on its composition.
Several key figures in the former UPFA government including Rajapaksa, former Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and former UPFA general Secretary Susil Premajayantha appeared before the commission this morning. During the proceedings, lawyers representing the ex-President raised objections to the composition of the commission. The proceedings of the commission have been suspended till tomorrow in order to take a decisopn regarding the objections, secretary to the commission Lesil de Silva said. The special commission was appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena to investigate and inquire into serious acts of fraud, corruption and abuse of power, state resources and privileges. Several individuals including the former President were summoned over a complaint alleging the failure to make payments to a state-owned media institution for broadcasting campaign adverts during the presidential election.
