President leaves for New York
President Maithripala Sirisena left for New York today to attend the 70th United Nations’ General Assembly Sessions. According to the President’s Media Unit, the President and his entourage left the country at 10:25 on Wednesday morning and is scheduled to deliver a special address at the General Debate of the 70th UNGA on September 30 The president will also address the Sustainable Development Goals Summit on the sidelines of the UNGA. The President is scheduled to call on a number of world leaders including US President Barack Obama for bilateral meetings. Prior to his departure, two acting ainisters were sworn in before the president on Wednesday. Accordingly, Minister Ruwan Wijewardene was sworn in as the Acting Defence Minister and Minister Anuradha Jayaratne sworn in as the Acting Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment.
