Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has said if an interim government is formed, it should be under his leadership. In an interview with a private radio channel, the Premier said it was not practical to form an interim government without common agreement with all political parties. Q: Some MPs ask you to step down from being the Prime Minister? A. I don't think the majority is saying so. Some MPs may say so. People who don't have any knowledge of the past maybe saying it. No one has asked me to step down. I don't think anyone would do either," he said. Q. We learnt that former Minister Dullas Alahapperuma has sent a letter to the President saying that the Cabinet headed by the the Prime Minister should resign and an interim government be formed? A. What interim government? How can we form an interim government without a common agreement? If an interim government is formed, it should be under my leadership. I don't think others would agree to it, even with Ranil Wickremesinghe or anyone else. The Prime Minister has also reiterated that he is willing to discuss with the Galle Face protestors even now.

Parliament Speech - Dr Harsha de Silva

Today in Parliament I spoke of the dilution of Parliamentary powers over public finances. We urge the Government and President to abolish the Executive Presidency immediately and bring power back to Parliament. Prices of fuel have increased yet again, and IOC states that it is a consequence of the rupee depreciating by 60% in last month alone. They are correct, as the rupee ought to have been devalued systematically. The dollar which was held at 200 LKR is now selling at 349 LKR at banks and as high as 410 LKR in the black market. How can people survive at this rate? 22 million people are suffering due to inconsiderate policy errors! One has to be held accountable for this economic mess, as it is criminal negligence. Furthermore, when the Government was readying to pay USD 500mn in International Sovereign Bond (ISB) payments in January, I strongly advised the Government against it, as we would run out of money to finance our essential imports. However, the Government was determined to make the payment. I later revealed that a scam had been committed as (ISBs) worth USD 1000 were sold at a 50% discount for USD 500 to crony businessmen. Moreover, the cronies that purchased these ISBs made a 300-400% in just QUARTERLY interest revenue. Thus, I urged the then Minister of Justice, Ali Sabry, to immediately investigate this, however, nothing came out of this. There ought to be a forensic audit on this to find out who decided to make this reckless payment and just who benefitted! The people responsible need to be behind bars for steering Sri Lanka into the largest and most disastrous socio-economic crisis since independence.

Prime Minister Modi held “fruitful discussions” with his Lankan counterpart Ranil Wickremesinghe. They also discussed creating future economic spaces between the two countries, stated the Prime Minister’s Office. “Assured India’s full support to further strengthen bilateral development partnership including through people-oriented projects in Sri Lanka,” Modi said after his meeting with Wickremesinghe. Modi also held an extensive meeting with the Leader of Opposition Mahinda Rajapaksa and discussed the need for close collaboration between the two countries in the fields of counter-terrorism, security and economic development. “Had an extensive meeting with the Leader of Opposition, Mahinda Rajapaksa. We discussed the need for close collaboration between India and Sri Lanka in the fields of counter-terrorism, security and economic development,” Modi tweeted. A Tamil National Alliance delegation led by R Sampanthan also called on Prime Minister Modi and congratulated him on his electoral victory. Modi termed his visit to Colombo “immensely fruitful”. “Sri Lanka has a special place in our hearts. I assure my sisters and brothers of Sri Lanka that India will always be there with you and support your nation’s progress. Thank you for the memorable welcome and hospitality,” he said before leaving the island nation. Under Prime Minister Modi the bilateral ties between India and Sri Lanka have touched a new high, including in the areas of security co-operation, trade, and cultural ties. Modi visited Sri Lanka twice earlier too - in March 2015 and May 2017. Under the Modi government, India handed over the first lot of houses built under a USD 350 million project for people, mostly Tamils who live in Sri Lanka’s tea plantation areas. Modi arrived in Colombo from the Maldives where he held wide-ranging talks with Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Saturday. -Agencies
