Muslim MPs hold talks with Mahinda Rajapaksa

Several Muslim Parliamentarians who recently resigned from their ministerial portfolios are currently holding discussions with Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa. Ada Derana reporter said that the Muslim MPs arrived at the official residence of the former President at Wijerama Mawatha in Colombo 07, a short while ago. Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader Rauff Hakeem, All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) leader Rishad Bathiudeen, MPs A. H. M. Fowzie, Mohamed Harees, Ameer Ali and Abdullah Maharoof Mohammadu arrived for the meeting, he said. At a press conference on Monday (03), all Muslim cabinet, non-cabinet, state, and deputy ministers announced that they would resign from their portfolios. However, the four ministers and five junior ministers only resigned from their portfolios, not from the government or their parties. The ministers said their resignations would allow investigators to probe the claims without interference. Bathiudeen yesterday revealed they decided to take several collective actions in the next few days and to meet with the Most Ven Mahanayaka Theros, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, Leaders of Political Parties including the JVP and TNA, diplomatic community in Sri Lanka, UN Resident Representative in Sri Lanka, as well as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

(IGP) Pujith Jayasundara Speaks

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara testifying at the Special Parliamentary Select Committee stated that the President has asked him not to attend the National Security Council meetings. IGP Pujith Jayasundara is currently testifying before the Special Parliamentary Select Committee appointed to look into the terrorist attacks on Easter Sunday. When he was inquired whether he attended National Security Council meetings, the IGP responded saying that he attended the meetings until October 23rd in 2018 since the day he took up the post as the IGP. “However, then-Defense Secretary (Kapila Waidyaratne) verbally informed me that the President has asked to notify that there is no need for me to attend the meetings thereafter,” stated the IGP. “I didn’t inquire the next Defense Secretary whether I should attend the meetings again either. When I asked if I should send a replacement in my stead, I was told that there was no such need”, testified the IGP. “I was called again for the meetings after the April 21st Easter Day attacks”, said Jayasundara.

Arrests of intelligence officers risks national security

Parliamentarian Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera today expressed his displeasure at the recent arrests of the military intelligence personnel. He told a media conference that these arrests had jeopardised national security. Navy Intelligence Officer Dhammika Anil Mapa, Lieutenant Commander Sumith Ranasinghe and solider Udaya Thushara were arrested recently. “When I questioned several Police officers, they said the arrests were made because of pressure from foreign countries regarding Human Rights violations. But President Maithripala Sirisena expressed his views to the country clearly and said he would not allow military intelligence personnel to be arrested in an arbitrary manner. If there is a report of wrongdoing by military intelligence personnel, action must be taken after a proper investigation,” the Thera said.

Joint opposition MP Namal Rajapaksa said today he personally believed that imprisoning former army commander Sarath Fonseka should not have happened because he and his family members even conducted Bodi Poojas when he was injured in the bomb blast. He said Mr. Fonseka was not dragged to the court by politically insulting him like what happens today.“He was imprisoned through a legal procedure over allegations levelled against him,” Namal said. “We did not take revenge by politically insulting him like what happens today. I personally believe it would have been better if it did not happen,” he said.
