Sri Lankan Trade Unions ready for nation-wide harthal on Friday Several Trade Unions and civil organizations have planned to launch a 24-hour islandwide hartal in Sri Lanka tomorrow (06) against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the government. The Hartal Committee Trade Union Coordinating Centre (TUCC) has warned that the hartal will change into a continuous hartal from the 11th of May if the government and President fail to take steps by tomorrow to respect the public’s opinion. Civil Organizations and Trade Unions ranging over 2000 groups, including the health, transportation, train, power, and education sectors are set to participate in the hartal. Earlier today, the United National Self-Employed Trade Association said lottery dealers have decided to refrain from their duties tomorrow in support of the planned islandwide hartal. Addressing the media, President of the Association Krishan Marambage said lottery dealers/ agents will not engage in the sale of lotteries in the country. The Railway Trade Union has voiced its support for the hartal and will launch a trade union action from midnight today (05).

Tear gas fired on IUSF protest near Parliament

Sri Lanka Police fired tear gas on to the Inter-University Students Federation protest march close to the Parliament on Thursday (5) evening. The IUSF were marching from the University of Sri Jayawardenapura demanding the resignation of the President and the Government.

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation has limited dispensing fuel volumes for vehicles at filling stations with effect from today (May 05). Thereby, filling stations are permitted to pump only fuel worth Rs. 2,000 for motorcycles at a single time. For three-wheelers, the limit has been set at Rs. 3,000 worth of fuel. Meanwhile, the maximum amount of fuel allowed to be dispensed to cars, vans and SUVs is worth Rs. 8,000. However, the restrictions are not applied to buses, lorries and other vehicles used for commercial purposes, according to the CPC chairman. The CPC previously put restrictions on dispensing fuel volumes in mid-April, in an attempt to prevent a shortage of fuel and to curb fuel-related irregularities.

No choice but to raise sales tax - Ali Sabry

Sri Lanka's finance minister has told the BBC he has no choice but to hike the country's sales tax as it faces its worst ever economic crisis. In an exclusive interview, Ali Sabry conceded the government made a mistake when it almost halved the rate of value added tax (VAT) to 8% in 2019. Mr Sabry says the nation needs $4bn (£3.2bn) over the next eight months to pay for imports of daily essentials. His comments come amid mass protests over government economic policies.

Police buses parked at the MynaGoGama, removed

Sri Lanka Police on Wednesday (4) evening decided to remove the Police buses that were parked on the pavement opposite Temple Trees in Colombo. Police informed the protestors at MynaGoGama that court issued an order to vacate the premises. However, the group of Sri Lankans who were protesting at the site alleged that Sri Lanka Police was misleading the courts, at a time when the people were engaged in a peaceful protest. Attorney-at-Law Amila Egodamahawatte who visited the site moments later said a ruling will be delivered by the courts on the 9th of May 2022. Despite the police reading out a court order, the protestors continue to engage in their protest at MynaGoGama.

SJB hands over two no-confidence motions to Speaker

Sri Lanka's main opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) on Tuesday handed over to the parliamentary Speaker motions of no-confidence against the SLPP coalition government and embattled President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, even as the government announced the appointment of a Cabinet sub-committee to look into the proposal for a new Constitution.“We met the Speaker at his residence and handed over two no-trust motions, the first one against the President under Article 42 of the Constitution and the other against the government," SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara said. Article 42 stipulates that the President is responsible to Parliament for the exercise, performance and discharge of his functions. Madduma Bandara said the party wants the motion to be taken quickly. The Parliament meets tomorrow for the first of eight sittings this month.

USA-wide protests in solidarity with Sri Lankan protestors

For the first time in history, Sri Lankan living in the United States of America organized a USA-wide protest on the 1st of May 2022, in solidarity with the protests taking place in Sri Lanka against the present President, Prime Minister, and Government. Thousands of Sri Lankans living in the United States stood in solidarity with their fellow Sri Lankans in a protest series organized by the Sri Lankan Student Collective in the USA. The protests took place across 50 locations in 43 States in the US. The Sri Lankans in America also signed a series of letters requesting that the wealth and income of Rajapaksa’s who hold US citizenship, be investigated and to save Sri Lanka from the Rajapaksas. The letters are to be submitted to the Senate and the US Congress.

Three persons including a 14-year-old boy have been arrested by police over an accident last night involving a Defender vehicle and a motorcycle at Kuliyapitiya, which had caused the death of the motorcyclist. The accident had occurred in the Kanadulla area in Kuliyapitiya last night when the Defender had collided with a motorcycle, killing the motorcycle rider on the spot. The deceased is a 38-year-old resident of Kanadulla in Kuliyapitiya. The police spokesman said that three persons including the driver of the Defender vehicle were arrested and that a 14-year-old boy is also among the arrestees. Meanwhile it is reported that a group of residents of the area angered by the incident had attacked the Defender vehicle and torched it as police officers had attempted to escort it to the police station.

Minister of Health Prof. Channa Jayasumana has issued a Gazette Extraordinary, allowing a price increase on a total of 60 varieties of medicinal drugs. As per the communiqué, dated April 28, the traders, distributors, pharmacists, medical practitioners, dentists, veterinary surgeons, medical institutions including private medical institutions, and pharmacies are permitted to raise the retail prices of relevant medicinal drugs by 40%. Accordingly, a tablet of 500mg of Paracetamol will now cost Rs. 4.16 and a tablet of 75mg of Aspirin, which was previously at Rs. 5.06, is now priced at Rs. 7.08. Meanwhile, the price of a tablet of 375mg of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid has been increased to Rs. 83.71. The gazette notification mentions the revised price of a tablet of 50mcg of Thyroxine as Rs. 14.41. The prices of these 60 varieties of medicinal drugs were previously revised in a gazette notification published on the 15th of March.

Train services are disrupted today (April 28) as the employees from several railway trade unions have not reported to work, says the General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways. A host of trade unions representing all state, semi-government and private sectors resorted to an island-wide strike for 24 hours today (April 28), to express their dissatisfaction towards the government. Many sectors in the country including plantation, agriculture, electricity, fisheries, banks, health, ports, economic centres, teachers and principals will join the trade union action. According to reports, approximately 1,000 trade unions have pledged support for the strike action.
